Ryanair has been named the world's favourite airline, as new figures show it carried more passengers than anyone else last year.

According to new figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the low fares airline carried 101.4 million passenger globally in 2015.

This put it well ahead of the second placed EasyJet, with the British company carrying 6.6 million customers.
Emirates came in third with 51 million, while Lufthansa ranked fourth with just under 47 million passengers.

Ryanair spokesman Robin Kiely said that it expects to carry some 117 million people this year.

To celebrate passing the 100 million mark last year, Ryanair have released 100,000 bargain seats across its European network at prices starting from €19.99 for travel in October and November. They're available online until midnight on Monday August 29th.

The Ryanair website has been visited by 300 million people in the last year alone.

In other aviation news, the latest annual Airline Baggage Report by the aviation communications and IT services group Sita shows there has been a 50% reduction in the total number of bags mishandled since 2007 due new technology and process investments by airports, airlines and baggage handling firms.

While 23 million individual checked in bags were delayed or otherwise mishandled last year, this should be put in the context of a 10% increase in individual passenger flights to 3.5 billion during 2015.

Speaking on Breakfast Business earlier, Nick Gates of Sita said further technological change will continue to improve matters including the introduction of new electronic luggage tags:

"They'll be a little bit more expensive than a baggage tag, but they'll be cleverer, they'll be smarter, they'll have an electronic display, they'll have built-in tracking capability. [With] some airlines like Delta Airlines in the USA, you can actually track your bag now with your smartphone. So once it's checked-in, you can just go to the app in you phone and it will tell you where your bag was checked-in, it will tell you if it's arrived at its destination..."
