Revenue is urging people to contact them if they have a query about today's local property tax deadline.

Homeowners who use credit or debit cards, cheques, postal orders or even cash for the bill should have made arrangements to pay their bill by 5pm this evening.

Anyone who does not pay before the deadline could face extra charges.

Customers also have the option of making phased payments over the year.

The rate of LPT is 0.18% for properties up to a market value of €1 million, although several local authorities have made minor adjustments to that rate.

Ann Looney from Revenue says the vast majority of people do pay their bill.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, she said: "97% [paid] in 2016, which is on par with 2015. The bulk of people want to pay on time - we provide a range of payment options, we provide a good online service, and we have the help desk."

She added that anyone who sends in a cheque today will have their payment accepted, and it is likely to be processed over the next week or so.

The local property tax deadline can be reached on 1890 200 255, which is open until 8pm tonight and from 8am until 8pm tomorrow.

You can find out more details about the tax on Revenue's website.
