A retired surgeon, who was convicted of indecently assaulting two boys, has been released on bail pending an appeal.

85-year-old Michael Shine, of Wellington Road in Dublin, was jailed for 20 months for the attacks on two young patients.

Shine was convicted last month of indecently assaulting the two 15 year old boys in the 1970s following a month long trial.

The retired surgeon denied the charges.

The court heard he groped them while they were patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and at his nearby clinic.

He was jailed for one year and eight months.

Shine has launched an appeal against both his sentence and conviction, and today applied for bail pending the appeal.

His barrister said he was making the application on 17 grounds and it was contended that two of them had a strong possibility of being successful.

The court heard Shine is elderly and in poor health.

The three Judges at the Court of Appeal granted bail with some conditions pending the outcome of the appeal - meaning Shine has been released from jail.
