Doctors could soon start issuing fit notes if they're allowed to scrap sick notes.

New research from University College Dublin has found GPs here would like to copy the system already in place in the UK for signing people off work when they're unwell.

The Sunday Times reports medics are concerned that sickness certificates focus too much on disability and not enough on fitness to attend work.

The fit notes, which were brought in in 2010 in the UK, also act as return to work certs, which can suggest an employee resume lighter duties after major illness.
