The Tánaiste says it would be good for democracy if the Banking Inquiry report was published.

However, she says she does not know if it will happen and that is dependent on the committee itself.

Earlier Minister Brendan Howlin said it was out of the government's hands now.

Joan Burton says she hopes there will be a final report:

It now looks unlikely that the Commission of Investigation into IBRC will be given the teeth it needs to complete its work before the election.

Mr Justice Brian Cregan says he does not have the ability to investigate a series of transactions at the former Anglo Irish Bank.

The Taoiseach has provided opposition party leaders with an option that would overcome the difficulties of confidentiality and privilege.

This morning, Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin says Fianna Fáil’s response to their proposed solution has been 'perverse'.

Jack Horgan Jones of The Sunday Business Post told Newstalk Breakfast there is unlikely to be a resolution before the election - and the Taoiseach may be hedging his bets:

"He has probably recognised that it is an issue for the next government, so he has circulated to the leaders of the opposition because they are probably going to be involved in some guise that they should be beefed up.

There is a not-so-charitable way of looking at it, which is that he is effectively trying to co-opt the government into his response into what was a government-caused problem and therefore kind of 'defang' the government's response to it, which may occur during the General Election campaign."
