The US Navy has confirmed that remains have been found during the search for 10 sailors missing after a US destroyer ship collided with an oil tanker.

The USS John S McCain hit oil tanker Alnic MC in the early hours of Monday morning, in an area east of Singapore.

Five other sailors were injured in the incident. Their injuries are not life threatening.

The US ship arrived at Changi Naval Base yesterday afternoon following the incident, where damage control efforts are continuing.

Meanwhile, Malaysia, Singapore and the US have been involved in the search for the missing sailors.

In a statement this afternoon, Admiral Scott Swift, commander of the US Pacific Fleet, said: "We are still searching for our 10 missing sailors. That remains our focus.

"US Navy and Marine Corps divers joined a search today, assessing sealed compartments in damaged parts of the ship. The divers were able to locate some remains in those sealed compartments.

"Additionally, the Malaysian Navy has reported that they have located potential remains. They are working to confirm and identify those remains."

He explained that the ship has experienced 'significant damage', but noted that "it is clear that [the crew's] damage control efforts saved their ship, and saved lives."
