A post mortem on the body of a woman found in a roadside ditch in Co Wexford does not suggest she died in suspicious circumstances.

The remains were found in Ballyandrew near Ferns by a woman who was out walking her dog on Monday.

The examination was completed by Deputy State Pathologist Linda Mulligan at University Hospital Waterford on Tuesday.

It has established the remains are those of a woman aged in her 50s.

The body had been at that location in Wexford for approximately 12 months.

It is understood the results are inconclusive, and are not pointing Gardaí in a particular direction.

Further toxicology tests results are to be carried out, but there is nothing at this stage to indicate any suspicious circumstances.

Investigations, including DNA tests, are ongoing to confirm the identity of the body.

It may have been a tragic death rather than something suspicious - but as they were found on the side of the road, further investigations are needed.

One line of inquiry is that the remains are those of an Italian woman as documents were found in a bag close to the scene.

The road has now re-opened.

Investigating Gardaí are continuing to appeal for information.

Any person with information is asked to contact Enniscorthy Garda Station on 053-9242-580, the Garda Confidential Line at 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
