A new poll has found the popularity of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has risen amid the Brexit controversy.

His approval rating has gone up four points to 53%, according to the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll.

This rating was achieved only once in 15 years by Enda Kenny, just after the 2011 general election.

Mr Varadkar's party, Fine Gael, sees its highest rating for more than six years at 36% support.

While satisfaction with the Government is at its highest in almost a decade.

Fianna Fáil has dropped four points to 25%, but party leader Micheál Martin is up six to 43%.

Sinn Féin support has remained unchanged since the last poll at 19%, while the Independents and others are down slightly on 16%.

The Labour Party remains on 4%, while the Green Party is on 3% nationally - but hits a high of 9% in Dublin.

Both Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams and Labour leader Brendan Howlin see their approval ratings decline marginally - to 29% and 19% respectively.

The poll was taken on Monday and Tuesday in the height of the row over Brexit.
