Lagarde condemns "cowardly" letter bomb at IMF office in Paris

French police say one person has been hospitalised after an apparent letter bomb at the offices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Paris.

An employeee was injured in the hands and face as they opened the envelope.

While staff were evacuated from the building earlier as a precuation.

Police in Paris say that operation has now ended, but that an investigation is on-going.

In a statement, the IMF managing director Christine Lagarde condemned what she called a "cowardly act".

"I have been informed about the explosion in the IMF's Paris office, which caused injuries to one of our staff.

"I have been in touch with the office, and my compassion goes to the colleagues there.

"I condemn this cowardly act of violence and reaffirm the IMF's resolve to continue our work in line with our mandate.

"We are working closely with the French authorities to investigate this incident and ensure the safety of our staff.”

The IMF Europe office serves as liaison to EU institutions and governments - as well as international organisations in Europe.
