A harmful paint thinner chemical has been found in gravy granules sold by Lidl in the UK.

The discount supermarket chain is recalling two batches of its Kania Gravy Granules after they were discovered to have been contaminated with xylene.

A notice issued by the supermarket said: "Lidl UK is recalling Kania Gravy Granules, Meat and Chicken, 300g, Best Before Date October 2017 and November 2017 only."

Xylene occurs naturally in petroleum and crude oil.

Public Health England said exposure poses a health risk, causing irritation to the mouth, throat, nose and lungs and in severe cases can lead to heart problems.

In the worst cases it can cause liver and kidney damage and coma.

An alert on the Food Standards Agency website said: "Exposure to xylene in food products represents a health risk as it can cause adverse effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

"The contaminant levels in this product exceed those set to minimise this risk and the product is therefore being recalled as a precaution."

The notice will be displayed in all stores that sold the products, and customers are being urged to return the product for a full refund.
