New figures show the number of homeless families has passed 1,000 for the first time, with more than 2,000 children being put up in emergency accommodation.

The Irish Times reports that in the past week alone, four families had to be placed in adult hostels late at night, with children on blow up beds on the floor.

The housing charity Threshold will appear before the Dáil Housing and Homelessness committee this morning, which aims to find solutions to the current crisis.

The Housing Agency estimates that €1.3 billion is needed over the next four years to fund a social housing programme with 13,500 new homes.

The Agency is holding a conference at Dublin Castle this morning, that will hear calls for the EU to extend government borrowing to fund more social housing.
