Medical facilities in Florida will not be charging victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, writing off more than $5.5 million in costs. 

Forty-nine people lost their lives and many more were injured on the night of June 12th, when gunman Omar Mateen opened fire in the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Two of the hospital groups that treated the majority of the patients in the wake of the attack, Orlando Health and Florida Hospital, have stated that they will not be charging for "out-of-pocket medical expenses" incurred by those who were injured. 

Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Health President and CEO David Strong said that the shooting had been a horrible tragedy, and that "during this very trying time, many organisations, individuals and charities have reached out to Orlando Health to show their support. This is simply our way of paying that kindness forward."

One of the hospitals in that group, the Orlando Regional Medical Center, treated 44 of the victims of the attack, while one victim still remains hospitalised there as a result of their injuries. While the insurers of those who were treated there will be billed, they noted that any costs that weren't covered would not be charged to anyone who received treatment.

The Florida Hospital group's president and CEO, Daryl Tol, said that they would also not be billing people who had been treated there or their insurance companies, and would not be charging them for follow up surgeries that they needed either.

"It was incredible to see how our community came together in the wake of the senseless Pulse shooting," said Tol. "We hope this gesture can add to the heart and goodwill that defines Orlando."
