One person is dead following a workplace accident in Co Tipperary.

Gardai confirmed the accident happened just outside the town of Nenagh on the old N7 Limerick Dublin road this afternoon.

The man was working as part of a commercial gas works project bringing gas from Limerick to Nenagh.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority are conducting separate investigations.

Though early reports suggested an explosion, Gas Networks Ireland denied this in a statement.

A Garda spokesman said they would not be releasing details about the deceased until all next of kin were informed.

The road at the site of the explosion has been closed by Gardai pending a forensic examination of the scene.
