One person has died after the car they were travelling in went on fire and collided into a wall in Waterford.

The crash happened at around 6.30pm yesterday on the N72 at Ballygalane, Lower Lismore.

A body was removed from the car and taken to Waterford University Hospital. There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time.

The deceased's age and gender are not yet known as the body has not been identified.

The section of the road was closed to facilitate a garda examination but has since reopened.
