Two men are being held by gardaí after fleeing from the scene of a collision in Clare.

The men, aged 25 and 19, were in one of two cars involved in a crash in Ennis at around 10am yesterday.

They were apprehended by an off-duty garda and arrested following a foot chase.

A male pedestrian in his 40s was seriously injured in the collision, which took place on Gort Road at the Sheils roundabout.

He was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where his condition is believed to be life threatening.

The occupants of the second car, two women in their 60s, were taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The arrested men were treated for minor injuries and are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Witnesses have been asked to contact Ennis garda station on 065 684 8100 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.

Gardaí say they are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was in a nearby filling station and shopping centre at the time.
