Steve Carell found himself unwittingly staying in character during the shoot of his latest film Foxcatcher directed by Bennet Miller.

The actor, whose performance is being touted as an Oscar contender plays the part of American multimillionaire John Du Pont who was convicted of murdering Olympic wrestling winner David Schulz in 1997.

Carell told The Green Room that once the make-up and prosthetics were applied, his appearance was transformed and people tended to avoid him.

“People naturally wanted to be separate to me. I was off-putting and organically I just stayed in character. No–one wanted to talk to me.”

The actor usually associated with comedic roles says he was surprised to have been selected for the role but didn’t have any doubt he could play the part of the sinister Du Pont.

“I just think of myself an actor, not necessarily a comedic actor. Those are just the parts I’ve been hired to do more often than not.

I put my faith in Bennet (Miller), if he thought I was capable of doing it, then I was. I didn’t really have any doubts.”

For the full interview, tune into The Green Room with Orla Barry this evening from 9-11pm.
