The European Commission has launched a new website keep people up-to-date with Brexit negotiations.

The site contains the latest speeches and official documents as they are published.

The site also includes details of the organisational structure of the EU's negotiating team.

Michel Barnier is the chief negotiator for the bloc, while Sabine Weyand is his deputy.

The team will also have a strategy team, budget personnel and a group for internal market regulation.

Included on the Internal Market, Sectors and Cross-Cutting Regulation group is Irish man Tadhg O'Briain.

Mr O'Briain, who was educated in NUI Galway, is a policy officer at the commission.

Ruth Deasy of the European Commission says the site is important as it will update the public on how Brexit will affect the ongoing Irish relationship with the EU and the UK.

"Well the commission has said very clearly to MEPs that it wants the negotiations to be transparent and it set up a website where all the important documents are there to read for anybody.

"And they also mentioned very clearly that they want any deal to maintain stability in Northern Ireland, and to take account of the Good Friday Agreement".

It comes a day after a majority of the European Parliament voted in favour of a resolution of key principles for the UK's withdrawal from the union.

On the question of resolving the issue of Irish border, the EU Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt said: "It will be very difficult, and it will be very high on the priority list.

"For the parliament it is an essential point - that's the reason why in the resolution we say: no hard border, respect in all its aspects of the Good Friday and...it is the EU-27 who have to take on board the interests of the Irish Republic".
