A 26-year-old new mother has died following a road crash in Tipperary.

The incident happened just before 12:30pm on Monday on the M8 northbound.

Nicola Kenny, who had just given birth on Sunday, was killed when a truck collided with a car which had three women on board.

Ms Kenny was pronounced dead at the scene and the other two women aged in their 50s - believed to be Ms Kenny's mother and aunt - were brought to University Hospital Limerick and South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Ms Kenny's baby, Lily Rose, was born in Clonmel but transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.

It is thought the women were on their way to the hospital to visit the baby.

Reporter with the Irish Independent, Conor Feehan, told Newstalk Breakfast this was a particularly tragic case.

"A phone call came thorough from Temple Street and the family decided to pull into the hard shoulder on the motorway so they could concentrate on the phone call.

"Thankfully the news from the hospital was good - and I'm sure that there was some joy in the car and some relief, when they were told that Lily Rose was doing well and was going to be transferred back to Clonmel.

"Unfortunately just as the phone call ended, a truck smashed into the back of the car."
