Netflix has revealed that it is producing a prequel TV series to Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal.

A collaboration between the streaming giant and The Jim Henson Company, a short trailer reveals how much the fantasy adventure film was a passion project for the famed puppeteer.

The 10-episode series will be overseen by director Louis Leterrier, best known for Now You See Me and The Incredible Hulk.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects,” Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix, said in a statement.

“I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”

Released in 1982, the Frank Oz-directed The Dark Crystal at first struggled to find an audience, competing against box-office juggernauts E.T. and Tootsie in a packed Christmas market. But in the decades since, the story of the evil Skeksis bested by the innocent Gelfings, has gone on to become a cult classic.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will detail how the Skeksis took control of the Dark Crystal on the planet Thra. The show goes into production in the Autumn, with Netflix set to release it in 2018.
