Netflix is overhauling its rating system - ditching star ratings in favour of a 'thumbs up / thumbs down' alternative.

A video released by the company likens it to Tinder for films and TV shows. As you like or dislike titles it starts to fine-tune its algorithm with the aim of helping users to find more content that's suited to their preferences.

"The star rating you see next to each title is being replaced with a personalised % Match score. This score is a prediction of what Netflix thinks you may enjoy watching, based on your own unique tastes," Cameron Johnson its Director of Product Innovation commented.

"The % Match is based solely on our algorithms analysing your individual viewing habits and behaviour - it is not a measure of overall popularity across the service," he added.

Netflix believes that users find the current star system confusing.

The star rating users see is not an overall rating - it is a rating based on how much Netflix thinks that you will like the show or film.

"Netflix has had star ratings for much of our history, but we’ve learned through over a year of testing that while we’ve used stars to help you personalise your suggestions, many of our members are confused about what they do.

"In contrast, when people see thumbs, they know that they are used to teach the system about their tastes with the goal of finding more great content. That’s why when we tested replacing stars with thumbs we saw an astounding 200% increase in ratings activity," the company said.
