While in space, nobody can hear you scream, back on Earth, NASA fanboys and music samplers everywhere are squealing with joy at the American space agency’s new SoundCloud account.

Their library of sounds documents everything from the early days of the Space Race (Sputnik’s beeping), though to the iconic real vocal clips of “The Eagle has landed,” and “Houston, we’ve had a problem”. But the range of sounds is, if you’ll pardon the pun, truly out of this world, including lightning on Jupiter, interstellar plasma and the rousing speeches of JFK.

NASA in inviting sound engineers and musicians everywhere to use the sounds to create music, there are no copyright issues. Producers are not allowed to use the NASA logo or name, but provided the agency is listed as a source, any conceivable sound application is fair game.
