A murder hunt is underway following the death of 78-year-old Rose Hanrahan in Limerick.

The body of the pensioner was found at her home on New Road in Thomondgate on Friday afternoon.

Gardaí have set up an incident room at Mayorstone Park garda station.

Superintendent Derek Smart is appealing for witnesses.

"Rose is a 78-year-old female, she was a widow living on her own on New Road in Thomondgate.

"She was very much a part of the community there, she was very much loved by the people around her and her family - she was a strong and independent woman.

"It is to that very community, and the wider community, that I am now appealing for any information that you may have in regard to how Rose came to what has happened to her.

"Again it's any information - even if you don't think it's relevant, let us decide how relevant it is.

"Just pick up the phone and call us.

"I think the community, as always in Limerick, will come together and I would appeal for them to just go that extra step and make the call".
