In a story worthy of a verse in the greatest hit of Alanis Morissette’s career, more than 200 people succumbed to food poisoning at a food safety conference in Baltimore.

A report released last week states that the ‘Chicken Marsala’ served in the Baltimore Convention Center was the dish most commonly consumed by the 216 people who fell ill. The pan-seared chicken breasts most likely infected with spores of Clostridium perfringens, bacteria which is commonly found on raw meat and poultry.

The report also says that the local health services in Baltimore only became aware of the outbreak when attendees started calling the city’s emergency services.

Those who suffered from food poisoning experienced diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, headaches, chills, vomiting, and fever.

It was the first outbreak in the 16-year history of the ‘Food Safety Summit’, and the organizers have said they’re already working with the catering staff to ensure that an outbreak does not happen at next year’s event.
