There are more homeless people in Dublin at the moment than there were 90 years ago.

That's according to DePaul, a charity supporting people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Dublin and throughout Northern Ireland.

The organisation say that a street-count carried out on a single night in November 1925 found 134 people sleeping rough and that last November, the Dublin Region Homeless Executive identified 168 people sleeping rough.

DePaul also say homeless people with addictions, mental health issues and complex needs must be supported in the longterm after they are placed in social Housing.

It would welcome the Housing First Approach to tackling homelessness instead of the 'quick fix solution' of emergency accommodation which is currently being provided here.

The Housing First model, which originates in New York, has been a great success in Australia, Canada and America and could work well in Ireland.

The homelessness figures come as the Government promised this week more than €300m to build 1,700 homes over the next two years in a massive social housing scheme.
