According to reports in Turkey, a military plane has crashed on the Turkish-Syrian border.

Turkish news agency Anadolu says it's likely to be a Syrian fighter jet - however there's been no airspace violation and no intervention by Turkish forces.

At this stage it's not known what caused the crash and technical problems are not being ruled out.

Syrian opposition has since told the Turkish Anadolu Agency that they shot down a plane belonging to the regime.

The regime plane was allegedly bombing Idlib province in northern Syria when it was shot down by the opposition forces, said group spokesman of Ahrar al-Sham Ahmed Karaali.

He said "Reportedly, a Syrian regime plane crashed around Hatay's Samandag Yaylacik region."

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said it was not clear yet whether the plane crashed on Turkish or Syrian soil.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the area and it's believed the pilots ejected before the aircraft went down.
