A 28-year-old student from Melbourne is on a mission to have coffee with every single one of his 1,088 Facebook friends.

Matt Kulesza started the 1,000+ Coffees project just a few weeks ago and has already landed himself a job through one of his Facebook connections.

Mr Kulesza started the project to get to know people he might have had known years ago, or had fleeing interactions with. He tries to go on five coffee dates a week.

“I just message them on Facebook and say, ‘Hey, do you want to grab a coffee?’ It’s just part of my weekly routine now.

Mr Kulesza says he has already met all his Facebook friends in person at some point, either through mutual friends, when travelling, through work or previous partners.

“I’ve rekindled a friendship with someone I was friends with in primary school who I haven’t seen since 1998. It was amazing, just seeing where they’re at and seeing that we can still get along really well. He’s an amazing underwater photographer and we’re going to go diving in a few weeks. I had my tarot cards read by somebody, too.

“I don’t really see [the project] as a chore. I enjoy having coffees with people.”

He says while social media has made communication more efficient, it’s had a “strange effect” on our ability to communication face-to-face in the real world.

“I find it hilarious how in university lectures if we’re waiting for the lecturer to arrive, everyone is on their phones, totally silent.

“No one is taking up that opportunity to talk to people or network. It’s so funny. On the train everyone is just face down, glued to their screen. Surely that is going to have a strange impact on the way we develop.”
