A jury has heard a 22-year-old man died after being shot three times outside a house in Athy, Co Kildare.
James Lammon of Cadington Way in Athy denies murdering Jason Doogue on August 21st, 2015.
Mr Doogue was sitting on a wall outside a house in the Greenhills estate in Athy with a few friends that evening when a man approached them on a bike.
The court heard the young man was shot twice at close range and again in the back as he tried to make his escape.
Kerida Naidoo, who is acting for the DPP, said the gunman was wearing a hooded top and a balaclava.
He said the gun had a silencer and that he pulled it from the waistband of his trousers before opening fire.
Mr Naidoo said it will be alleged the gunman then left the scene on his bike.
He told the jury that whether Mr Doogue was murdered will not be an issue, and that the real question will be whether Mr Lammon pulled the trigger.
The trial will resume hearing evidence tomorrow.
