A man is due in court later in connection with a serious sexual assault in Dublin.

A woman in her 30s was attacked in an alleyway off Parnell Street at around 3am on Monday morning.

It is understood the alarm was raised when concerned residents heard the woman screaming.

Gardaí arrived on the scene while she was still being assaulted.

A man in his 30s was arrested but became ill and had to be brought to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

He was later taken to Store Street Garda Station.

He has since been charged by detectives and is due to appear before Dublin District Court at 10:30am this morning.
