A 52-year-old man has appeared before the Special Criminal Court, charged with possession of explosives in suspicious circumstances.

It is after a suspect package was found outside Store Street Garda Station in Dublin yesterday.

The army bomb disposal team was called to the station yesterday morning, when a suspect package was discovered.

Neighbouring premises were evacuated – and the device, which contained viable components was removed.

This afternoon, Patrick Brennan, with an address at Lindisfarne Avenue in Clondalkin, appeared before the three judge Special Criminal Court - charged under section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act.

The 52-year-old, dressed in a blue t-shirt and jeans, did not stand or reply when the charge was read to him.

He is charged with having in his possession four 400g blocks of TNT and three detonators.

Mr Brennan has been remanded in custody to appear in court again next Friday, when counsel for the DPP has indicated they will oppose bail.
