A man has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Co Mayo on Thursday evening.

The 50-year-old had been swimming with friends at an area known as 'The Point' in Westport Quay.

The man made it to the shoreline and an ambulance was called to the scene.

However he was pronounced dead shortly after 7.00pm.

His body has been taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.

A post mortem is to be carried out over the weekend.
