It has been confirmed by the Garda Ombudsman that a garda car involved in a fatal collision in Co Louth early this morning was not in pursuit, but was on patrol.
A man in his 30s died after he was knocked down by the car on the main Carlingford to Dundalk road, just outside Bellurgan, at about 1:20 this morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road remains closed pending a forensic examination of the scene and diversions are in place.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating the incident and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.
GSOC spokesperson Lorna Lee says the incident happened on a dark stretch of road:
