A jury has heard a Roscommon man had stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication a few months before he killed his girlfriend in Sligo.

Oisín Conroy, who is from Boyle, admits strangling Natalie McGuinness in 2015 but has pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity.

Just after 10am on Oct 28th 2015, emergency services took a call from Oisín Conroy who said he had killed his friend by strangling her with a rear-naked choke hold.

Armed Gardaí entered his flat on the Mail Coach Road in Sligo to find the naked body of his girlfriend Natalie McGuinness on his bedroom floor.

Mr Conroy was also naked and covered in blood.

The court heard he took up an aggressive stance when asked to step back and had to be tasered.

He was treated in hospital for a significant self-inflicted wound to his head and while there, he admitted killing her out of temper and said he was sorry.

He later told Gardaí he thought he had to kill her to get her out of the Matrix. The court heard he had a history of mental illness and had stopped taking his medication a few months beforehand.
