A male pedestrian in his later 60s has died after being hit by a car in Limerick.

The man was fatally injured at around 1am this morning on the R513, in the Hospital area. 

He was rushed to University Hospital Limerick, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car escaped injury. 

The stretch of road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by forensic investigators. 

Witnesses have been asked to contact gardaí at Bruff station, on 061 382940.
