Two people have died in separate road accidents today.

One man has died after being hit by a lorry in Co Monaghan overnight.

The 24-year-old pedestrian was hit at around 2.00am at Drumquill, on the Castleblaney to Annyalla Road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the lorry was not injured in the collision.

The road remains closed this morning for a forensic examination and diversions are in place.

While another man has died and two people are in hospital after a two car collision in Co Louth.

The crash happened at around 6.15am at Tully Esker, on the Drogheda to Monasterboice Road.

The 36-year-old driver of one of the cars was killed in the collision - while the driver and a passenger in the other car, both in their 30s, have been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The road is closed for a forensic examination and gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
