An 18-year-old man has been charged over a serious assault in Waterford on Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested on Friday in connection with the late-night attack on John Street, in the city centre.

Gardaí who attended the scene found the victim, another 18-year-old male, lying on a path.

He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital and has since undergone surgery.

A 19-year-old man detained as part of the investigation on Thursday was released without charge yesterday evening.

The other arrested man is due to appear before a special sitting of Waterford District Court this afternoon.
