A strike threat and court action could be looming at Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus.

SIPTU and the National Bus and Railworkers Union have today withdrawn from long running talks on the privatisation of some routes.

The union says the National Transport Authority and the Department of Transport have failed to give any assurances on what will happen to workers if the plans to privatise 10% of all bus routes go ahead.

“We view this issue to be so serious that we’ve been trying to persuade the NTA and the Department of Transport, and indeed the minsters, both previous and current – that the route they’re on, if you’ll pardon the pun, is one that’s legally unsound,” said NBRU general secretary Dermot O’Leary.

O'Leary is giving the NTA and the government 7 days to stop the tendering process.

“We’re prepared to challenge that in the event of them moving ahead with the tendering,” he added.

The NRBU says it now intends to service notice of High Court proceedings against the implementation of the Government's privatisation policy.
