An Taisce has welcomed a decision to block plans for a major expansion of the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre in Dublin.

Late last year, South Dublin County Council gave the green light for additional retail units as well as a 2,500-seat Olympic-sized indoor ice arena and event venue at the centre.

The €150m expansion would have seen the centre double in size.

The proposed extension reportedly would have created nearly 700 jobs through construction and staffing upon completion.

However, the approval has now been overturned by An Bord Pleanála due to inadequate public transport access and the potential for additional congestion on the M50.

An Taisce, an independent charity aiming to protect Ireland’s natural and architectural heritage, has welcomed the ruling as a “major vindication” of the role the organisation can play in promoting good planning.

Ian Lumley, the charity’s heritage officer said: "Bad zoning and planning decisions never go away and have an adverse impact through the decades."

The charity also questioned why Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) which had also raised concerns about the development had failed to appeal the planning decision.

Liffey Valley was purchased for €630m last year by a large-scale German pension fund.
