Chester Bennington, the lead singer of rock band Linkin Park, has died aged 41.

Bennington, who had six children from two different marriages, had been frontman of the popular band since the late 1990s.

The news of Bennington's death was confirmed by his bandmate and frequent co-vocalist Mike Shinoda.

The New York Times reports his death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

As well as his most well-known band, Bennington was also lead singer for Dead by Sunrise, and also spent two years fronting veteran rock band Stone Temple Pilots.

Bennington had spoken publicly about his past battles with drug and alcohol addiction, telling NME in 2011 that he didn't "want to be that person anymore".

Linkin Park made their name as one of the most successful 'nu-metal' bands of the early 2000s, with hit singles such as Crawling, One Step Closer and In The End.

The band's album Hybrid Theory (2000) sold more than 10 million copies in the US alone, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all-time.

Their distinctive early sound encompassed elements of heavy rock music mixed with rap, but more recent albums from the band saw have seen them expanding with different styles.

Their most recent album One More Light was released in May, and the band had been due to launch the North American leg of their ongoing tour later this month.
