We could still see Gerry Adams as Taoiseach, according to a Fine Gael TD.

Former minister Michael Ring says that the left wing parties have the numbers to form a coalition.

With eight seats left to be filled, Fine Gael have 49 seats, Fianna Fáil 43 and Sinn Féin 22.

16 Independents, four members of the Independent Aliiance, five AAA/PPB and three Social Democrats candidates have also been elected, along with six Labour and two Green TDs.

Michael Ring says it is shameful that many of the smaller groups are ruling themselves out of government.

"You have the whole left bloc there - they have all the answers now, they can actually form a government and have Gerry Adams as Taoiseach", he said.

"None of us know what's going to happen over the next three weeks," he added.

He also says there will be discussions within each party to work out who they may group with, but that with counts ongoing we do not have a full picture yet:
