The 84th U.S. Annual Conference of Mayors took place on Sunday in Indianapolis, and one of the meetings that took place there has been condemned outright by the Chinese government.

The Dalai Lama was there to present a keynote speech on the global significance of building compassionate cities, and during a Q&A panel discussion moderated by former NBC journalist Ann Curry, he was joined on-stage by artist and noted human rights activist Lady Gaga.

According to The Guardian, this meeting has sparked an angry reaction from Beijing, were government officials have labelled the spiritual leader as a “wolf in monk’s robes”, an activist behind Tibetan independence.

In light of the meeting, according to Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily: "[T]he Chinese government, the Central Propaganda Department, SARFT (State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China) and [other office] have issued important instructions ban Lady Gaga, [and] require all mainland media and network-wide [to immediately] stop playing and upload all of her work."

Lady Gaga is not the first artist to be banned in China, with Selena Gomez having two performances there cancelled earlier this year when the Chinese government happened upon photos taken of her with the Dalai Lama back in 2014, while Miley Cyrus, Jay-Z and Maroon 5 have all also been banned for speaking out in favour of the Dalai Lama and/or Tibetian independence.
