The Irish naval vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett rescued 652 people during rescue operations in the Mediterranean today.

The Defence Forces say three people were also declared dead during the operations to the north-west of Triopli.

125 refugees and migrants were rescued during the first operation shortly after 6am this morning.

95 people were rescued from a second vessel shortly after.

Over the course of the day 432 others were rescued from four rubber crafts.

The rescued people are said to be receiving food, water and - where needed - medical treatment.

On Monday, more than 6,000 people were rescued as they attempted to make the perilous journey to Europe.

More than 3,000 people are believed to have died attempting to make the Mediterranean crossing this year.
