Home entertainment has changed beyond recognition over the last fifteen years or thereabouts. The death of the video store, the ability to record TV, as well as the arrival of content on demand means our habits have changed and continue to evolve. 

Netflix has played a key role in that evolution and has just announced a new feature for younger viewers. 'Interactive Storytelling' allows users to control and manipulate what happens next in two shows, Puss in Boots and Buddy Thunderstruck. 

Viewers simply sit with their remote control or touchscreen device and pick what option they would like to see play out. 

This type of technology may be rolled out to different genres down the line, but writing in a blogpost, Carla Engelbrecht Fisher, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix said it made sense for them to trial it with children's content first.

"The children’s programming space was a natural place for us to start since kids are eager to “play” with their favorite characters and already inclined to tap, touch and swipe at screens. They also talk to their screens, as though the characters can hear them. Now, that conversation can be two-way. It’s really about finding the right stories - and storytellers - that can tell these complex narratives and bring them to life in a compelling way."

Children can interact with the two shows in different ways and land upon alternative endings. 

The company will add further interactive titles to the platform in the coming weeks.
