Ivanka Trump was booed and hissed after she attempted to defend her father Donald's attitude towards women.

President Trump's daughter was speaking at the W20 summit in Berlin.

Sitting next to the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel America's 'first daughter' was asked about "attitudes towards women your father has publicly displayed in former times".

Ms Trump, speaking during her first international trip as an unpaid adviser to her father, said: "I know from personal experience, and I think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades when he was in the private sector are testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man."

The audience's booing and hissing, however, came when Ms Trump praised her father for supporting paid-leave policies.

She said she was "very proud of my father's advocacy", adding that he was a "tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive".

She was then pushed to respond on whether or not "attitudes toward women your father has displayed might leave one questioning whether he's such an empowerer for women".

Ms Trump replied: "I've certainly heard the criticism from the media, that's been perpetuated," words that drew laughs from the audience.

The W20 Summit - involving countries from the Group of 20 - is urging the "full economic empowerment of women".

Ms Trump said: "As a daughter, I can speak on a very personal level, knowing that he [President Trump] encouraged me and enabled me to thrive.

"I grew up in a house where there were no barriers to what I could accomplish beyond my own perseverance and my own tenacity.

"He did that and he provided that for us - there was no difference for me and my brothers.

"As a business leader you saw that, and as a President you will absolutely see that."

The US President tweeted earlier:

During his campaign for the presidency, a tape emerged in which Donald Trump bragged about being able grope women because of his fame.
