Irish vessel rescues over 230 migrants off the Libyan coast

The Irish naval vessel the LÉ William Butler Yeats has rescued 234 migrants off the coast of Libya.

It followed a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre.

The ship successfully located and rescued 117 migrants from a rubber craft north-east of Tripoli on Thursday.

The William Butler Yeats was appointed the on-scene commander, and coordinated the rescue of a further 117 migrants by the MV Alexander Maersk.

All 234 migrants are now on-board the LÉ William Butler Yeats receiving food, water and medical treatment where required.

The role of the Irish Naval vessel is to provide a search and rescue capability and to undertake humanitarian rescue operations at sea in the Mediterranean.
