Emergency flights have been laid on to help dozens of holidaymakers trapped in the French Alps following heavy snowfall.

Over the weekend, thousands of vehicles were stranded after drifts blocked roads into two of the main ski resorts in the Savoie region.

More than 100 Irish tourists who were caught up in the storm were flown back to Dublin last night.

The 147 passengers were among thousands of holidaymakers forced to sleep in makeshift shelters in the Alps.

Tour operator Crystal Ski says a direct Chambery to Dublin flight departed yesterday evening carrying those affected by the unprecedented weather conditions.

The firm has apologised to its customers and says it appreciates their 'frustration'.
