An authentic Irish pub located just off Wall St in New York City has been named the best bar in the world.

The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grogg - run by Belfast natives Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry - took the No.1 spot on the World's 50 Best Bars list from Drinks International magazine.

With a drink menu composed of "72 historically accurate cocktails," the three story bar first opened its doors in 2013 and has come in at second place for the past two years in a row.

The Belfast men, who travelled to New York “with every intention” of building up the world’s best bar, took to social media to announce the win:

They posted on Facebook: “This is for every bartender, in every town, who thinks he can’t play with the big boys, just by virtue of where he or she came from.”

“This is for the outcasts, the underdogs and the no-hopers. This is for the Dead Rabbits! WORLD’S NUMBER ONE!!!”

The three story bar beat out London’s Artesian which has held the honour for the past four years running.

Co-owner Jack McGarry told Drinks international the award comes with “an overriding sense of completion.”

When we were in New York during the very dark days, when we were flat broke and there was absolutely progress, only one thing kept us going,” he said.

“We knew we were about to open something special - something that would be our version of The World's Best Bar.”

“We are deeply proud that the bartending world shares our belief in The Dead Rabbit and even more proud of the entire team that helped us build it.”

The bar includes Liam Neeson amongst its patrons and has already won a string of awards - including world's best bar at last year's Spirited Awards.

The American Bar at the Savoy hotel in London came in second with two other London establishments – Dandelyan and The Connaught Bar – making up the top four just ahead of Attaboy of New York in fifth.
