Two nuns, who became trapped in an elevator in Italy for two days, were forced to drink their own urine in order to survive.

The 58-year-old and 68-year-old were stuck for two days and three nights in Rome on one of the hottest weekends of the year.

Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, today quoted a paramedic saying "In order not to lose consciousness, they drank their own urine."

The sisters got into the malfunctioning lift at a nun's residence on Rome's Via Aurelia known as Casa Suore Mariste on Friday. The Irish nun along with a New Zealand-born nun were eventually rescued on Monday morning.

After becoming trapped the pair began calling for help. However, they had no mobile phone between them and the building they were in was empty up until a cleaner came in on Monday morning.

After the cleaner raised the alarm the women were rescued by the fire brigade and taken to San Carlo di Nancy hospital, where they were treated for severe dehydration.

A paramedic said that it was a miracle that they survived.

"The sisters were almost completely dehydrated, it's a miracle they were still conscious when the emergency services arrived," the paramedic said.

The pair told police that they had prayed in the hope their guardian angels would arrive to save them.
