An Irish man has died off the north-east coast of Spain.

Domhnall Mac a tSíthigh, also known as Danny Sheehy, was rowing in a currach with three other boatmen.

Mr Sheehy, who was in his 60s, was thrown into the water when the boat capsized at the mouth of the River Minho.

The three others in the boat were taken to hospital, but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

He had been taking part in the 2,500km Camino voyage from Ireland to Spain. Singer Glen Hansard and artist Liam Holden have also been involved in various stages of the voyage.

Kerry native Sheehy was a well known poet, historian, author and Irish language advocate.

He once circumnavigated the coast of Ireland in a naomhóg with Ger Ó Cíobháin.
