As Computer Science Education Week draws to a close, a focus for the Hour of Code program in Ireland was put on teaching girls and underrepresented groups coding and computer science.

HP was one of the major global partners in Computer Science Education Week, and more than 1,000 of its employees across the globe volunteer to teach coding to over 15,000 students.

In Ireland, 40 HP employees worked with five schools across the country, teaching them hour long classes in coding. The schools were Scoil an Linbh Íosa in Prosperous, Holy Family National School in Rathcoole, St Pius X Girls in Terenure, Maynooth Boys School, and Scoil San Treasa in Kilshanroe.

With emphasis on teaching girls and underrepresented groups, HP Chief Diversity Officer Lesley Slaton Brown said “Giving students access to computer science education and getting them excited about potential careers in STEM fields is critical to fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators.”

Computer Science Education Week continues until the 16th, and for more information all year round you can go to Code.org.
