Young people and those living in cities are more at risk of skin cancer, according to the Irish Cancer Society.
Today the society launched its SunSmart campaign, encouraging people to protect their skin.
A new report by the National Cancer Registry of Ireland shows that we have the highest reported incidents of skin cancer in Europe - 10,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year.
The report also shows that over the past 20 years skin cancer has increased by 72% among young women and 53% among young men.
Kevin O'Hagan of the ICS says that using sunbeds is still a major risk.
"Exposure to repeated sunburn and to sunbeds can certainly increase the risk of skin cancer in the long-term," he explained.
He also said that "skin cancer itself is fairly treatable, [but] without early diagnosis people can be in real trouble. So we're encouraging people to check their skin, check their moles for any unusual sign or any unusual lump".
